The Australian Beach Volleyball Champships are officially underway at Sandstorm Beach Club in Queensland. The draws have been confirmed with 31 men's teams and 29 women's teams battling it out for the men's title of Australian Champion.
Among the teams competing are the new AIS pairing of Josh Slack and Isaac Kappa (stay tuned for a feature story on these guys) as well as Bo Soderberg/Anders Hoyer and Soren Svane/Jonathan Lilliendal Jorgensen of Denmark. Young guns Sam Boehm and Chris McHugh go into the event as the No.2 seeds while the new team of Dan Carey and Brett Richardson round out the top three seeds. Kappa and Slack are seeded sixth in the event after a strong showing at the WA Open, their first Australian Beach Series appearance together.
On the women's side of things Nat Cook won't be in action this weekend but her world tour partner, Tamsin Hinchley, will be, playing with Alice Rohkamper. Rohkamper would normally have been playing with Taliqua Clancy but injury robbed them of that chance. Heading the women's list is Becchara Palmer and Louise Bawden. Together Palmer and Bawden have won the Queensland and Victorian Open's and would have been favourite to take out last weekend's WA Open until the flu grounded Bawden for the weekend. Palmer continued her super form though, teaming with Rohkamper to take last weekends title so you would expect this pair to be there at the business end of competition.
