Becchara Palmer and Louise Bawden have continued their fantastic form this summer, rounding out their preparations for the 2010 Swatch FIVB World Tour with victory at the Australian Beach Volleyball Championships on Sunday. The pair defeated Dutch pair Merel Mooren and Margo Wiltens 2-0 (21-15, 21-15). Aside from a hiccup in the fourth round where they were stunned by Queensland's Mowen sisters it was an almost flawless performance from the AIS team.
On the men's side it was mate against mate with housemates Sam Boehm and Josh Slack facing off on opposite sides of the net for the third time in a week. Last weekend at the WA Open it was Boehm and partner Chris McHugh who won out 15-13 in the third. When Boehm and McHugh faced the newest pairing at the AIS - Slack and Isaac Kappa - in the fourth round in this tournament it was 20-18 in the third so a thriller in the gold medal match was almost guaranteed. The two teams didn't disappoint with the match once again going the full distance but sadly for Slack and Kappa once again they found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline - again 15-13 in the third.
It is the ideal preparation for all of the finalists as they set themselves for the first Swatch FIVB World Tour event in Brazil that starts on April 19th.
In fact all medal matches featured teams that are setting themselves for this year's world tour. In the women's bronze medal match Beijing Olympian Tamsin Hinchley (nee Barnett) had a great weekend with AIS scholarship holder Alice Rohkamper, winning the bronze over surprise packets Jordan and Justine Mowen. Hinchley will resume her partnership with quadruple Olympian Natalie Cook later this year. The men's bronze medal match feature adopted Aussies Bo Soderberg and Anders Hoyer who were too strong for another Queensland pair in Sean Thomas and Justin Feuerriegel.
